Today our Faith and Action ministry team was present at the annual National Prayer Breakfast where every sitting president has attended since Dwight D. Eisenhower in the 1950s.
Our role at the breakfast was to assist in the back “prayer room” where personal ministry is made available to everyone involved in the event.
Sometimes called by the misnomer “the Presidential Prayer Breakfast,” the National Prayer Breakfast is not organized or presided over by the president. In fact, it’s always sponsored and chaired by two members of Congress (one Democrat and one Republican). So, it’s really produced by the legislative branch, not the executive.
Some people dismiss events like the National Prayer Breakfast as meaningless exercises in civil religion, but we don’t see it that way. To us, this event and others like it give our nation’s top elected and appointed officials a reason to pause and give their attention to something much larger than themselves—namely, Almighty God.
